Oil and Roofing…choose a Drexel Metals Metal Roof System

May 29, 2010

We are mist of one of the worst environmental disasters in US history…the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Drexel Metals LLC prides itself as being a company with a focus on sustainability and sustainable products…whether its using FSC printed marketing materials, putting all of our technical data in our electronic binder or focusing on the life cycle costs for the numerous architects and owners who ask for our products by name. Our cool roofing products reflect heat energy, cool very quickly at night and help our owners save energy on cooling costs….but it does not stop there..It’s important for us to show you the impact of competitive roofing products as they relate to oil consumption during the manufacturing process.

oil

As you can see the asphalt products consume a much greater amount of oil and gas during the manufacturing process..not to mention that these oil saturated products degrade and will off-gas CO2.

Drexel Metal roofs will last twice as long as the asphalt products mentioned above…when choosing your next roof system you should consider all of the elements and the impact they have on the environment.

Drexel Metals DM-ARM member named an "In-Kind Leader"!

David Rehberg: an In-Kind Leader

If you’ve been out to an Austin Habitat construction site in the last 5 years, chances are you have met David Rehberg, working with his shiny roofing machine, leading construction crews, or simply smiling and offering words of support.

Rehberg, a six time national champion sailboat racer, was originally bit by the volunteer bug after helping the Austin Yacht Club build its new docks. He enjoyed donating his time and skills immensely, but realized that focusing his efforts on helping those in need would make a greater impact.

Habitat Austin, TX

For this reason, he turned to Austin Habitat for Humanity. He began his service as a member of a highly skilled group of volunteers that builds on weekdays. In time, David began coming out on Saturdays to complete construction tasks alongside larger groups of unskilled volunteers.

One Saturday, as David prepared to build some cabinets, construction manager Jesse Porter took him aside. “David,” he said, “I don’t want you to install cabinets.” Pointing to a group of volunteers, he continued, “I want you to teach them to install cabinets.”

Since this day, David has been among the most committed regular volunteer leaders on site.

Already critical to Austin Habitat’s success, David didn’t stop there. He understood that in order to put families in homes, Austin Habitat needed not only volunteers but materials for them to build with. As a partner in the newly-formed company Austin Roofing and Siding, he arranged for the company to provide equipment to assist Austin Habitat with its metal roofing needs.

Today, Austin Roofing and Siding has donated tens of thousands of dollars of services to Austin Habitat. Additionally, it has enabled Austin Habitat to become one of the only affiliates to use volunteers in the installation of metal roofs.

Recently, David stretched even further by initiating conversations with Drexel Metals, the company which provides the metal for his work. Thanks to David’s advocacy, and the generosity of company president Brian Partyka, Drexel Metals will underwrite a large portion of the cost of the metal for our roofs.

In-Kind donations of services and materials are one of the most important sources of donations to Austin Habitat. Whether materials or service, these donations offset our expenses, in turn allowing us to build more homes.

It is a rare opportunity when a room filled with more than 50 Professional Architects and MEP Engineers have the opportunity to mix and mingle with high profile elected officials while enjoying a banquet of superb food and drinks complimented by a one-hour credit to their AIA continuation education requirements. Yet, on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the U.S. Hispanic Contractors Association (USHCA) and Drexel Metals provided exactly that coveted combo to the professionals attending their event held at Austin’s Holiday Inn located at 6000 Middle Fiskville Road.

Drexel Metals President, Brian Partyka, provided valuable information and educational instruction to the attendees at the “Lunch and Learn” seminar, during a comprehensive presentation introducing the latest and most advanced technology regarding Sustainable Design using Metal Roofing. Topics such as environmental benefits, life cycle costs, solar technologies and LEED credits were explained in detail. The attendees, receiving One Credit for Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) and Sustainable Design (SD) AIA learning units, also were able to discuss issues of importance to their industry during the “Meet and Greet” portion of the day’s events. Noted local dignitaries included Texas State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., State Representative Eddie Lucio, III, City of Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Austin Assistant City Manager Rudy Garza.

USHCA Chairman, Frank Fuentes noted that, “The USHCA has long prided itself on bringing the latest, most cutting edge technology to our members and our community. As profound advocates for education and self-empowerment, the opportunity to partner with a nationally acclaimed company, such as Drexel Metals, allows us yet another venue to bring meaningful training to our community while providing an excellent opportunity for open and meaningful dialog with our elected officials”.

Brian Partyka echoed Chairman Fuentes’ sentiments and added that “The opportunity for Drexel Metals to introduce the attendees to such a highly respected and devoted advocate for Hispanic contractors and industry professionals by including The Honorable Alberto Gonzales, former U.S. Attorney General, to our program brought yet another level of commitment and focus to the education and training of the Hispanic construction professional. Mr. Gonzales provided a motivating and heartfelt speech highlighting the Hispanic community’s desire to live and participate fully in this country with his “Achieving the American Dream” insight”.

The “Lunch and Learn” attendees were honored by opening remarks made by Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell. The Mayor told the audience that this event embodied the spirit and commitment of the City of Austin that he was so very proud of. The Mayor noted that not only was Austin friendly to Minority-Owned Business Enterprises, but to all small business as a whole.

This event would not have been complete were it not for the ever humorous and well thought out comments and observations of the event’s Master of Ceremonies, Retired State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos. Using his renowned quick wit and armed with a well-versed and full comprehension of the event’s purpose and impact, Senator Barrientos provided the attendees with a delightful added dimension to the day’s activities.

The USHCA utilized the time well by incorporating an Awards Ceremony to honor three well deserving recipients. The City of Austin’s Assistant City Manager, Rudy Garza was chosen as a co-recipient of the USHCA’s annual AZTECA Award honoring outstanding individuals for their significant achievement as an advocate of inclusion. ACM Garza, pictured below with USHCA Chairman, Frank Fuentes and State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos said, “I am both touched and honored to have been recognized by such an outstanding and well-respected organization as the U.S. Hispanic Contractors Association. While we do the things we do because they are the right action to take, it is a wonderful feeling to be recognized for your efforts”.

The Honorable Alberto Gonzales also received the USHCA’s coveted AZETCA Award. While Mr. Gonzales possesses an impressive professional background and stellar professional credentials, he also has been a tireless advocate for Hispanic inclusion. Mr. Gonzales has never forgotten his heritage as the son of a former migrant worker. His work in the Hispanic community and his achievements as a role model have earned him recognition as Hispanic American of the Year by HISPANIC Magazine and one of The 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America by TIME Magazine.

award

Event Co-Host, Drexel Metals President, Brian Partyka also was honored as an AZTECA Award recipient.  For the first time in the nearly ten years of existence, the USHCA found three most deserving candidates and elected to honor each and every one. Chairman Fuentes said, “Mr. Partyka, for his leadership in empowering Hispanic contractors to grow and prosper both as individuals and as business leaders made his addition as an award recipient an extremely easy decision. Under the leadership of Mr. Partyka, Drexel Metals, in conjunction with the USHCA, are developing a mentorship program for members of the USHCA wishing to expand their current business interest in the Metal Roofing industry. Drexel Metals will provide the knowledge, hands-on training and equipment critical to this rapidly growing yet specialized segment of business. The ability to rapidly expand a qualified, capable pool of well-trained, competent, and hard-working contracting pool will be one of the highlights of our joint program”.

The “Lunch and Learn” program is one of the newest offerings in an ever-increasing array of instructional, educational and informative seminars and workshops offered by the USHCA. Mr. Fuentes said he was overwhelmed by the enormous interest in this seminar and it’s astounding success. He said, “This program is the first in a long line of similar educational seminars the USHCA will provide its membership and members of our construction-industry related community. Look for the USHCA to continue its cutting-edge foray into the ever-increasing training and education needs indicative to our industry. We are just getting started”.

Drexel Metals Solar Roof Systems…still perfect for ARRA projects!

October 28, 2009

DrexMetSolar

I was recently given a copy of an article from the Boston Globe’s opinion section (10-22) concerning the importance of the development of more advanced green technologies, specifically those companies dealing in renewable technologies.  As it turns out, the US is nowhere close to becoming a leader in renewable energy and we continue to hope for the next best thing while countries like China are developing more efficient technology that is commercially available.

Here’s something interesting;

  • ARRA funds invests $112B in green technologies and $ 2B of earmarks for research…with a pending $15B additional funding if cap-and-trade ever gets off the ground.
  • China is spending $ 221B of their stimulus on renewable energy and other clean technologies and will soon become the leader in renewable energy production with a major focus on higher standards and subsidies to support clean energy.   China solar producers account for 1/3 of the worlds solar production with plans on putting plants in the US.

I’m all for driving the per watt price down making solar more affordable for the masses….but what about those companies that have been producing panels here in the US with no major incentive or national renewable energy policy to speak of.

Sustainable Design – Think about a Drexel Metals Standing Seam Roof

October 10, 2009

Sustainable Design – Think Metal Roofing…
FACT – steel takes the pressure off renewable resources

Great Metal Roof Systems
Great Metal Roof Systems

Sustainability can be defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs all considering social, environmental and economic impacts of your actions.  Sustainable Design on the other hand seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health and comfort of building occupants thereby improving building performance.    The bottom line is that the built environment has a profound impact on our natural environment, economy, health and productivity.  According to Energy Star, buildings in the US account for:  36% of total energy use/65% of electricity consumption; 30% of greenhouse gas emissions; 30% of raw materials use; -30% of waste output/136 million tons annually and 12% of potable water consumption.

School Project - LEED Silver
School Project – LEED Silver

I was lucky enough to have been selected to speak at our national trade show recently about this exact topic and how it relates to Metal Roofing products.  Metal Roofing is a great product for the environment as compared to its competitive roofing products which mostly contain asphalt and oil based ingredients.  It won’t “off gas” greenhouse gases like its competitive asphalt products which ultimately contributes to climate change.

Recycled Content:
The basic facts is that metal roofs are made of recycled materials and can be recycled at the end of their useful life.   More steel is recycled each year than all other materials combined. Two out of every three pounds of new steel are produced from old steel.  According to the Recycle Steel Insitiute; steel  has an average recycling rate in excess of 50 percent since World War II and over 60 percent since 1970. Last year, over 67 million tons of steel scrap were recycled in the United States.  Using steel takes the pressure off renewable resources: a typical 2000-square-foot home requires about 40 to 50 trees, about an acre’s worth, to build with wood.  With steel, only the equivalent of about six scrapped automobiles are needed.

Metal Roofs are COOL-
Surface temperature is a key indicator of how much heat energy will transfer into a building…makes complete sense?  Sure…metal is a great conductor of heat as well as cold! Metal Roofs on the other hand use Infrared Reflecting pigments which actual reflect the heat energy (non visable heat energy) back into the atmosphere.   Solar Reflectance is measured as a percentage {0=fully absorb heat to 100% zero heat gain) of reflected sun energy.  So…let’s say you want a white roof…the Solar Reflectance is a 70%….this means the surface is reflecting 70% of the suns energy and absorbing 30%…the less absorbed the cooler!  The general rule of thumb for every one point of increased SR the surface temperature drops by one degree F.  The higher SR the better!  The Energy Star program requires the SR to be a minimum of 25% to qualify for the tax credit (steep slope <2:12).

Solar Reflectance is only one of many components of cool roofing…emittance, system design and proper ventilation should also be considered especially if you live in cooler climates.

Thermal emittance works in tandem with SR as it’s a measure of how quickly a material emits heat energy back into the atmosphere.   This is also measured as a percentage (0 to 100%)….again the higher the name the better.  Bare steel products have a very low emittance (about a 10%) and most painted products have an 87%.  The best way to think of emittance as it relates to roofing materials is the higher the number the quicker the roof will cool when the sun sets.  Combine this with a SR and you have one of the most energy effiecent roof system.  The key to metal roofs is that they retain 95% of the initial solar reflectance so you’ll enjoy years of energy savings.

I mentioned system design depending on where you are located…in cool climates you may want to consider adding an air space (3/8” minimum…ask your Drexel Metals contractor about a product named Enkamat/Colbond) between the metal roof and the roof deck along with proper ventilation at the eaves, gables and soffit.…air acts as a great insulator and will help the heated air to escape through natural convection in the summer and will help to keep your warm air in during the winter months.   The use of a thermal barrier or a radiant barrier can also be considered.

Thanks for reading!  Hope this helps to explain some of the great sustainable benefits of using metal roofing products.   Make sure to visit our website www.drexmet.com to find an installer or request additional information about us.  We’d be happy to help.
