<p>Drexel Metals met today with the Greater Philadelphia  Innovation Cluster (GPIC) for Energy Efficient Buildings regarding  exploring the opportunity to work together to create awareness about the  importance of creating and monitoring performance of the building  envelope.  The GPIC (http://gpichub.org)  received $129 million from the  Federal Government&#8217;s Energy Regional Innovation Cluster (E-RIC)  Initiative. The award included $122 million from the U.S. DOE to create  an Energy Innovation Hub to develop innovative energy efficient building  technologies, designs and systems.</p>

<p>The  goals of the GPIC are to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon  emissions of new and existing buildings, and to stimulate private  investment and quality job creation.</p>
<div id="parent-fieldname-text">
<p>The  GPIC will focus on full spectrum retrofit of existing average size  commercial and multi-family residential buildings.  The program goal is  to transform the commercial building retrofit and new construction  processes into a systems-delivery industry, and demonstrate building  operational energy savings of 50% by 2013-2015 in a scalable, repeatable  and cost effective manner across a broad building stock, while  preserving workplace quality.</p>
<p>A comprehensive research,  development and deployment program will be performed that simultaneously  addresses the maturation of integrated design and system technologies,  exploration of new business models and public policies that accelerate  the technology adoption, and the creation of robust workforce  development paths. Commercial building stock turns over slowly, and  major overhauls are relatively rare. Major retrofit demonstrations are  emerging, like the Empire State Building, but they are rare point  solutions and achieve less than 40% energy improvement and are not  generally scalable to the less than 100,000 square foot building stock.</p>
<p><em>Scalable 50% energy reduction retrofits – </em>DOE’s  building energy goal is to reduce the annual energy use of buildings by  80% in the year 2050.  New approaches to design/build/operate building  system technologies, new business models,  public policies, and  workforce development paths are required.  An interim goal of  demonstrating 50% energy efficiency improvement was selected to stretch  beyond applying conventional solutions which have been demonstrated in  select retrofit examples in the ~30% efficiency improvement range.  This  50% energy efficiency goal requires that the technical, policy and  workforce solutions sets are scalable to at least 50% of today’s  commercial building stock.  This goal demands rethinking every technical  approach and solution set as well as adopting new business value  propositions, public policy positions and workforce development  processes.</div>

You load the better half and the kids into the car,  passing a mall and a stream of quick-serve restaurants along the way to  the airport. Amidst the seasonal luggage and population headaches, you  board the jumbo jet, where soon it descends onto sunny Florida terrain.  As the plane drifts downwards, the shiny rooftops glimmer, a light show  welcoming wagon to a much deserved vacation. The taxi carries the family  towards the sun drenched hotel, the immaculately crafted art-deco homes  fly by, the escapist architecture a perfect pairing to the enchanted  aroma of seashells and leisure. <p>MetFab offers a complete line of metal roofing and architectural sheet metal products that include 42 engineered metal roof system assemblies, radius metal roofing products, batten systems, flush wall and soffit systems, custom cornice and historic trim fabrication, engineered perimeter edge systems and column covers. MetFab is also part of the Centria Dealer Network and will continue to proudly serve the Maryland area as a supplier of Centria Architectural Systems.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Drexel Metals Inc. donated all of the materials for the students at  UMASS to install a cool energy efficient metal roof system on their  Solar Decathlon home. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is  an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design,  build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective,  energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the  team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design  excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.</p>
<p>The  first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the competition has since  occurred biennially in 2005, 2007, and 2009. The next event will take  place at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.,  Sept. 23–Oct. 2, 2011. Open to the public free of charge, visitors can  tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how  energy-saving features can help them save money today.</p>
<h2>Purpose</h2>
<p>The Solar Decathlon:</p>
<ul>
<li>Educates student participants and the public about the many cost-saving opportunities presented by clean-energy products</li>
<li>Demonstrates  to the public the opportunities presented by cost-effective houses that  combine energy-efficient construction and appliances with renewable  energy systems that are available today</li>
<li>Provides participating students with unique training that prepares them to enter our nation&#8217;s clean-energy workforce.</li>
</ul>
<p>Team  Massachusetts designed the New England-inspired 4D Home for the U.S.  Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. This solar-powered prototype  is an affordable, ultra-efficient house that can adapt to a family&#8217;s  changing needs. The team hopes the 4D Home will serve as a precedent for  home builders and designers creating sustainable homes in New England.</p>
<h2>Design Philosophy</h2>
<p>Team  Massachusetts is concerned about the negative consequences of using  nonrenewable energy sources for the built environment. Yet using  renewable energy for buildings is successful only when baseline energy  consumption is minimized through passive strategies. The 4D Home  integrates efficient technology and passive strategies without  compromising simplicity.</p>
<h2>Features</h2>
<p>4D Home demonstrates how dynamic interior spaces can make compact living viable for a small family. Features include:</p>
<ul>
<li>An exterior composed of fiber cement board and wood-clad windows</li>
<li>Asymmetrical timber trellises that provide seasonal shading and a covered transition to the interior</li>
<li>A two-bedroom layout that is easily reconfigured by two sliding partition walls</li>
<li>Furniture, decor, and housewares designed and fabricated by student team members.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Technologies</h2>
<p>Team Massachusetts has integrated efficient and easy-to-use technologies into 4D Home. These include:</p>
<ul>
<li>A 28-panel photovoltaic array of monocrystalline silicon cells that are 19.1% efficient</li>
<li>Hybrid solar thermal panels mounted behind the photovoltaic modules for efficient heat transfer to the domestic hot water system</li>
<li>Blown fiberglass and closed-cell polyurethane spray foam insulation for air tightness</li>
<li>A refrigerator that uses less electricity per year than a 60-W lightbulb.</li>
<li>A Drexel Metals Cool Metal Roof System complete with above deck venting!</li>

But a historic reroof project is truly successful when those involved recognize that they don’t have to recreate history—they can improve it. The Surf Mall in Ocean City, N.J., recently became the enhanced highlight of the Ocean City boardwalk because of a new metal roof from Drexel Metals, Inc., Ivyland, Pa.</p>
<p>“Reroof projects give a building owner the opportunity to express a building’s history but with updated technology and materials,” said Brian Partyka, the president of Drexel Metals. “Almost any look can be created with metal because of various profile options, but metal also provides added strength, durability, longevity and sustainability.”</p>
<p>The mall’s history began as the Showboat Theater in 1929, a recreation of a previous theater that was destroyed by a fire in 1927. Showboat changed its name to SURF in 1939, and by the 1970s, the years began to show. Standing water, crumbling walls and roped off dangerous theater sections forced the theater to close in 1979. A renovated facility reopened years later as the Surf Mall, a stop for tourists and locals to collect souvenirs and boardwalk memorabilia. By late 2010, improvements were once again needed.</p>
<p>KMR Enterprises Inc. is an Ocean City design-build firm that worked with the mall owner to create reroofing options. “The mall was in desperate need of improvements,” said Michael J. Schlembach, a KMR partner. “The previous steel roof was rusted and faded, and there was evidence of coastal destruction and blow off. It was in really bad shape, and the owner needed to look at what could be done to improve the look of the building but also the safety issues.”</p>
<p>Schlembach and his team joined forces with Drexel Metals to battle this challenging project. According to Schlembach, he selected Drexel Metals because of its superior warranties, fast delivery, rollforming equipment and color-matching partnership. He added: “By picking Drexel Metals, we could work directly with them instead of going through a distributor or separate channels. They are so easy to work with and exceeded our expectations.”</p>
<p>Tear off work began in November 2010, once the summer boardwalk season was wrapped up. Working on the coast in the winter presented challenges, but what the crew uncovered was worse than any nor&#8217;easter. Underneath the deteriorated metal were a modified bitumen roof and an additional deck. Not only did all these layers show signs of damage, but the entire roof structure also had a bounce factor that needed to be corrected. The building’s original construction span created a roof deflection, which Schlembach believes allowed wind and water to penetrate the system and deteriorate the roof faster than is typical for a properly installed metal roof.</p>
<p>The crews worked quickly but meticulously to ensure the safety of the building occupants and retail supplies. Long days were spent tearing off the metal and immediately covering up what was removed. In the end, the 20-plus-member crew installed a new 5/8-inch plywood deck, redid framing and adjusted roof pitches to correct areas of ponded water. The plywood with stiffeners eliminated the deflection issues.</p>
<p>Drexel Metals supplied DMC175, a 24-inch coil with 18-inch pan. The new metal roof is a 1 ¾ Snap Lock panel, which was roll formed on-site. The 0.040-aluminum is coated with TRINAR® from AkzoNobel, Columbus, Ohio. The coating contains 70 percent PVDF resin for unmatched durability even in a harsh ocean front environment. This type of coating is considered the premiere finish for architectural metal construction applications thanks to its superior color and gloss retention. At the owner’s request, AkzoNobel created the custom color—Wind Surf Blue—to match the previous metal roof system.</p>
<p>“We are always willing to do custom color matches for specific projects, and the Surf Mall is a prime example of how this flexibility can result in an eye catching final installation,” said John Roscoe, of AkzoNobel. “The Surf Mall is a property that has welcomed generations of summer vacationers, and it needed a color that could return it to the center of attention that it deserves to be. Thanks to our custom color matching service, we were able to provide a finish that fit very naturally in a boardwalk setting.”</p>
<p>Coastal considerations obviously were vital for a building that sits directly next to the ocean. Schlembach selected a thicker gauge coil, stronger profile, additional clips and superior coating to help this roof stand up to Mother Nature. The roof was tested to meet Miami-Dade County standards of 135-mph wind load. New Jersey officials also enforced stringent engineering requirements to ensure the safety of the structure.</p>
<p>As a local business, KMR appreciates the team effort that was put forth for more than six months to improve Surf Mall. But as a resident, Schlembach hears firsthand what this retrofit means to the community. “I often ride my bike down the boardwalk and friends and familiar faces stop me and say, ‘Hey Mike, the Surf Mall looks great. The color just pops out at you, you can’t miss it.’”</p>
<p>Partyka added: “The Surf Mall shows that historic sites are more than a place to buy T-shirts and beachwear, but it also illustrates the need for meeting new codes and standards, proper installation, and advanced engineering. This project was such a success because so many companies put their expertise together to overcome what the coast and time had done to the 80-plus-year structure. Drexel Metals appreciates the professionalism and hard work of KMR, and we thank them for choosing us to be involved in their community improvement.”</p>

<p>Keep  in mind, it&#8217;s impossible to create a fireproof structure, fire ratings  system allows architects and builders to select materials that reduce  the spread of fire, giving more time for your family to vacate and  allowing more time for firefighters to arrive and fight it.  Drexel  Metal roof systems are fire-rated as Class A, they represent the most  fire protection offered in a roofing material.</p>
<p>Though your Drexel Metal roof system carries a of Class A fire  rating, your entire roof structure may receive a different rating. When a  building&#8217;s roof is fire-rated, all the materials are taken into  account&#8211;including whatever is underneath the metal roof. For example,  if a metal roof is installed on top of something that is not Class A  like wood shingles, the shingles will lower the roof&#8217;s fire rating  because they are made of a combustible material.
