Drexel Metals offers their contractors the ability to track their cool metal roof savings

October 17, 2010

DrexMetLLC_wTagline

You can’t manage what you don’t measure. It is an old management adage that is accurate today. Unless you measure something you don’t know if it is getting better or worse. You can’t manage for improvement if you don’t measure to see what is getting better and what isn’t!

Metal Roofing the Drexel Metals Way!!! Bringing great customer service to the metal roofing industry!

September 21, 2010

Here’s a quote from Chris McCormick, president and CEO of L.L. Bean, and three-time winner of the NRF’s customer choice award about customer service: “A lot of people have fancy things to say about customer service, but it’s just a day-in, day-out, ongoing, never-ending, persevering, compassionate kind of activity.”  Drexel Metals received the following email from our Shawn Darby, Drexel Metals’ New England Manager…his actions along with our great customers help to do “whatever it takes” to get the job done!

“At 5:45 this past Friday evening, I received an urgent a call from Green Home’s project supervisor Drew Griffith. He was on a job in upstate New York installing the DMC150SS to one of their  pre-fab eco friendly homes. The seamer they had was not working properly and he didn’t know what to do. Their company was paying 5 men to stay in a hotel for Friday and Saturday in order to finish the roof by the end of the weekend. After a short conversation over the phone with Drew G, I was certain I knew what the issue was. The seamer  hard a difficult time seaming our 24g metal when you use a 24g clip. All I needed to do to fix this problem was to get them some 26g clips……….Friday evening at 5:45??? 1000 pieces? The project happened to be in Chatham NY, which is an hour and twenty minutes from another customer, Dick and Deloris. I called Deloris to ask what was for supper, and  if they might by chance have some 1.5” clips that I could purchase to help Green Homes out? They were having fresh corn on the cob with assorted garden fresh vegetables, and yes they had clips as well!(BEST CUSTOMERS EVER?) Excellent, now all I had to do was get them from Middleburgh to Chatham? Tammy (Shawn’s wife) and I got up at 5:30 am Saturday, drove to Middleburgh (1 hour 45 min) to pick up the clips. I figured this would be the best option in case the seamer issue was more than just clips , I could also work on fixing it as well as making sure they were using it properly. When we arrived in Middleburg, Dick had the clips ready for us. I asked him how much we owed him? He said that he didn’t want my money. (I said GREAT! I will take 10 more boxes then.) When I insisted they take something for the clips, both Dick S and Deloris would have none of it. (BEST PEOPLE EVER?)

Tammy had not been to Dick and Deloris’ home before, and Dick and Deloris wanted to show her around. We were treated to the BEST VIEW EVER! A spectacular view from the top of their property. (Dick almost backed into the pond!) This is where thing go terribly wrong…..we were taking in the beauty of Dick’s baby blue Corvette (67?) and antique trucks when out of nowhere a GIANT spider started to charge after Tammy.  I had not seen the spider yet, but knew things were serious when I heard what has come to be known in my house as “The spider scream”. What happened next was nothing short of heroic on Dick’s part. Upon hearing Tammy scream, Dick turned and spotted the spider which by now was advancing rapidly at the helpless maiden. Dick threw himself onto the arachnid, fighting it with his bare hands.  A selfless act in the face of what I can only describe as pure terror…..on Tammy’s part that is, Deloris didn’t seem to mind the spider.

We said our goodbyes to Dick and Deloris and headed to Chatham. The clips worked wonderfully for Green Homes. I helped them install a dozen pans without an issue.

Thanks to Dick and Deloris for being themselves, good folks”  Also thanks to Shawn and Tammy Darby for doing whatever it takes to solve an issue for our customers!

Drexel Metals Metal Roofs assist NJ Coastal residences to meet new insurance requirements

September 1, 2010
Shingles

Attention all New Jersey Coastal homeowners insurance policyholders…check with your insurance company to see if they are requiring your coastal home to comply with wind mitigation requirements which will require your to evaluate your windows, garage doors, siding and most importantly your roof system.   Here are some important roofing requirements that your home will need to meet these wind mitigation requirements;

  • Roofs…must have roof ties connecting the roof framing to bearing walls and sheathing fasteners.
  • All roofs must have hurricane resistant shingles (High Wind {UL580 / Florida Product Approval or Dade County} + High {Impact UL2218})
  • Gable wall ends must be braced and stable
  • Roof trusses or roof rafters should be braced to resist lateral forces
  • Adequate roof venting, i.e.. ridge vents should be provided to relieve internal pressure on the underside of roof.

Here’s a quick solution for you to consider….install a metal roof that meets and is listed with Dade County’s Building Code Compliance Office bearing the Dade County stamp of approval.  If you live within 2,800 feet of the surf, 1,800 from the Bay or 600 feet from canals…then consider a painted Drexmet aluminum roof that meets a high wind uplift requirement.

Green Renovations is not a passing fad. Consider a Drexel Metals' metal roof as an important part of your plan.

July 18, 2010

According to the latest issue of EL Insights, which reports that the U.S. green building market value will balloon from $71.1 billion now to $173 billion by 2015. Commercial green building is expected to grow by 18.1% annually during the same time period from $35.6 billion to $81.8 billion. In this case, green building is defined as building with resource use and employee productivity in mind.  The explosive projected growth can be attributed both to a growing recognition of green building’s potential cost-savings as well as incentives from the government (i.e. the multi-million dollar Sustainable Communities Challenge Planning Grant program and the Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant program). Green renovation will also comprise a significant portion of future green building, thanks in no small part to government projects like then Recovery through Retrofit initiative, which offers $80 billion energy and environmental retrofits for federal buildings.

We speak all over the country about sustainable design, mostly to architects and designers, and the general opinion amongst this community is HVAC, windows and insulation are the items at the top of the list to be retrofitted. However we beg to differ…a standing seam metal roof can help to reduce your buildings cooling cost and if designed properly will the amount of heat energy that passes into your home or building.  A metal roof is made of recycled materials, can be recycled at the end of useful life and can be made locally reducing the need for packaging and freight.  Another benefit is that Drexel Metals can actually manage your KW usage before and after a metal roof is installed to prove our case.  If you can measure it…you can manage it!

Through a memorandum of understanding, Drexel Metals and the USHCA will jointly endorse and nationally promote Drexel Metals’ Association of Regional Manufacturers to the membership of the USHCA. Through this alliance, Drexel Metals will provide training to USHCA members in all aspects of metal roofing including, portable roll forming, installation techniques, as well as industry-specific marketing and promotion procedures.

Frank Fuentes, Chairman of the USHCA said, “The commitment Drexel Metals has made to the empowerment of our membership thorough the expansion of knowledge and the enhancement of capabilities will facilitate the growth and viability of contractors wishing to engage in the metal roofing industry. This extraordinary opportunity for the USHCA membership to share in cutting-edge technology will add practical skill-sets that compliment and expand our member’s trade specialties.”

Drexel Metals will also coordinate with the USHCA to conduct the OSHA ten-hour training program for its members and promoting safety as one of the highest joint priorities between Drexel Metals and the USHCA.

Mr. Fuentes noted that there are currently more than three million Hispanic construction workers in the United States, representing approximately 25% of the entire construction labor force. Mr. Fuentes further added, “Workplace injuries and fatalities continue to plague the construction industry and sadly, Hispanic workers account for the vast majority of those accidents. The USHCA is firmly committed to job site safety and to the implementation of sound safety practices in the workplace. Drexel Metals embraces the same philosophy as the USCHA on the importance of job site safety and the priority of providing current, effective and necessary safety training and continuing education to as many workers as possible. Through this partnership, Drexel Metals affirms its sincere commitment to the membership of the USHCA with both their technical training program and support of the continuation of the OSHA ten-hour safety marathon training workshops.”

Drexel Metals is proud to sponsor such innovative programming for the membership of the USHCA and hope we can provide long-lasting and pragmatic solutions, addressing the urgent need for safety training and the expansion of business opportunities for contractors interested in the metal roofing industry.”

Drexel Metals and the United States Hispanic Contractors Association also want to extend their heartfelt thanks to former United States Attorney General, Alberto R. Gonzales who introduced the two entities and played a significant role in helping solidify the strategic partnership.

“I have been very impressed with Drexel Metals over the last few years and as I have continued to work to find ways to promote entrepreneurialism and self reliance in the Hispanic Community, I saw an opportunity to achieve this objective with Drexel Metals and the United States Hispanic Contractors Association”, said Mr. Gonzales.

Oil and Roofing…choose a Drexel Metals Metal Roof System

May 29, 2010

We are mist of one of the worst environmental disasters in US history…the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Drexel Metals LLC prides itself as being a company with a focus on sustainability and sustainable products…whether its using FSC printed marketing materials, putting all of our technical data in our electronic binder or focusing on the life cycle costs for the numerous architects and owners who ask for our products by name. Our cool roofing products reflect heat energy, cool very quickly at night and help our owners save energy on cooling costs….but it does not stop there..It’s important for us to show you the impact of competitive roofing products as they relate to oil consumption during the manufacturing process.

oil

As you can see the asphalt products consume a much greater amount of oil and gas during the manufacturing process..not to mention that these oil saturated products degrade and will off-gas CO2.

Drexel Metal roofs will last twice as long as the asphalt products mentioned above…when choosing your next roof system you should consider all of the elements and the impact they have on the environment.
