LEED and Sustainability

Drexel Metals uses recycled metal our roofing components, which are themselves recyclable at the end of their life. Drexel also offers state-of-the-art photovoltaic laminates that can be applied to your roof’s surface to capture solar energy to reduce your electric bills. Sustainable materials and UV reflective pigments help to reduce cooling costs and achieve LEED credits.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Our products will qualify for one credit for the steep slope (>2:12) LEED-NC 2.2 Credit 7.2 Heat Island Effect: Roof in the Sustainable Sites category. The criteria for the point are that the roof must cover at least 75% (excluding skylights and equipment) of the roof surface and have a minimum SRI of 29. Drexel Metals will customize documentation for your LEED application based on the specific project. 

Drexel Metals uses coil manufactured by a basic oxygen furnace with 24.6% post consumer recycled content and 6.6% post industrial content. This can contribute to the material and resources 4.1 LEED credit.

Other credits to consider when using a Drexel metal roof system for this project:

  • Contributes to MR Credit 1.1 or 1.2 – Building Reuse
  • Contributes to MR Credit 2.1 or 2.2 – Construction Waste Management 
  • Contributes to EA Credit – Optimize Energy performance – Modeling /BIM will need to be completed.
  • Contributes to WE Credit 1 / 1.2 / 2 / 3.1 / 3.2 - Water Efficient Landscaping – The impervious nature of a metal roof can be used to capture rain water for non-potable water
  • Drexel Metals Solar Roof Systems Contribute to EA Credit 2.1 / 2.2/ 2.3 – Renewable Energy offsets.
